Good sauces of any flavor are a hard find for me. In addition to being gluten free I look for a very simple ingredient list with no mystery ingredients, like “Natural Flavors”, or anything hydrolyzed or autolyzed , as well as no additives, colors or preservatives.  When and if you find them, they will usually be a little pricy.  For years I have been making my own sauces, dressings and marinades.  They are not only good, they are simple, gluten free and ultimately really cheap.  I keep an assortment of cute  jars and bottles around, well almost a collection, to store my sauces in.

Sweet Tangy Gluten Free Barbecue Sauce

About 3 cups

Whether you are cooking up fresh barbecue or you want to give a second chance to some leftover chicken or meat, the homemade flavor will make it extra special. We love to have barbecue chicken one night, and then turn the leftovers into barbecue chicken pizzas with mozzarella, pineapple and black olives.

I store my extra sauce in the refrigerator for up to a week (longer if you used water) or in a freezer bag or container in the freezer, usually in 1 cup portions.

  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato puree
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar, a little heaping
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika, or regular paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin
  • 4-5 cloves garlic, grated, or an equal substitution of garlic powder.
  • Pinch of cinnamon (or about 1/16 of a teaspoon)
  • 1/2 cup of reserved cooking juices from your meat, if you have it, or stock or water. (if you you use the juices or stock it will keep about a week in the refrigerator. If you use water, you may keep it for up to a month in the refrigerator.)

  1. In a small saucepan, combine the tomato puree, molasses, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, all the dry spices and the garlic or garlic powder.
  2. Add 1/2 cup of the cooking juice, stock or water and bring the sauce to a boil.
  3. Reduce the heat and simmer until the sauce thickens and coats the back of a spoon, about 10 minutes.
